Art Szabo ‘84 via Chrome and Lightning
Mornin’.
One of the great things about music is there’s always another discovery around the corner; it could be an older album or a new discovery, but the horizon is always ever-approaching. Last week, spinning the WAAX album Big Grief was one of those “damn, I shoulda heard this earlier!” moments for me because it’s exactly the kind of album I am going to spin over and over at the risk of wearing myself out on it.
Anyway, if you haven’t heard it and you like huge, huge tunes… give it a whirl. I’ve got a cut from that album here alongside some other great stuff; here’s a few quick notes:
I tweeted about the beauwaves album and tried to nail down how they sounded and came up with: fuzzy punk-pop that plays like a long-lost SST Records cassette tape caked in dust but unearthed and still plays
Zack Schwartz of Spirit of the Beehive put out a cool mixtape kind of deal with warbly lo-fi songs with weird textural quirks n skittering beats abound as draag me; adventurous listeners will be rewarded, it’s super cool
I was going to cover the new Squarepusher album as a Quick Hit but I haven’t gotten around to it; that’s a great record, balancing throwback sounds to classic Squarepusher without being an empty nostalgia trip… love it
