Two emails in one week? What the hell??!
Yep, here’s another email from me.
It’s new release Friday, so I’m dropping into your inbox to share my weekly playlist (embedded above - it’s huge!) for you to dig through, plus some thoughts on just a few of the many albums I’m excited about. Also, buy music via bandcamp. It’s important. Here’s a Hype Machine Merch Table link based on the above playlist for you to make things even easier. I’ll leave it at that.
Here you go:
Like a lot of people, I’m so so so stoked for the Bachelor album. If you haven’t already heard, it’s a collab between Palehound (who I’ve loved since 2015’s phenomenal Dry Food LP) and Jay Som (who I’m slightly less familiar with, but I do remember really digging 2017’s Everybody Works LP.) Members of Big Thief and Chastity Belt show up here too, so it’s basically a supergroup spectacular. Only on my first listen, but there’s a nice mix of throwback midwestern indie rock textures with modern indie/dream/etc.-pop hooks going on that I can really get behind here. I can’t wait to spin this album into the ground this summer.
Mike Park’s Bruce Lee Band is back after their fantastic 2019 EP Rental!! Eviction!! (itself their first since 2014) for more politically charged ska-punk. Let’s face it, Mike Park is a true legend and an incredible force of positivity. Speaking of supergroups, Bruce Lee Band’s current line up includes Dan Potthast (MU330) & Jeff Rosenstock, plus the new record features Jer Hunter of Skatune Network. Sick!!
Japanese noise-rock act Bo Ningen was a new-to-me name when I sampled their self-titled album out today on the always reliable Alcopop! Records. It sounds super noisy, fuzzy, hooky and energetic though so it seems right up my alley.
Supreme Joy’s indie-rock LP Joy was recorded straight to Tascam 388 and it has that raw, ragged sound I love so much. Hearing some cool lightly psychedelic indie-pop guitar-rock going on here; shades of Mazes on songs like “Doldrums.”
Speaking of psych-pop, Sugar Candy Mountain is another new-to-me but immediately the reverby atmosphere and plucked bass with dripping guitar chords on “Running From Fire” told me I should be listening to this record, ASAP.
I’ll leave it at that, and let you do the rest of the digging through this playlist. Let me know what you are listening to on Twitter and let me know if I’ve missed anything you think I should be spinning! Enjoy the day, sending positivity your way.
