Followers of the tab (are ya out there?) might remember in past newsletters that I got a new job in the fall. With a steady flow of work here, I can’t do things like take a longer lunch hour so I can record a music podcast anymore, lol. Is this the end for the audio dispatch? Likely not, but I digress.
I’ve been trying to stay active on Twitter. I still post new music Friday playlists over there with general frequency so please follow me if you aren’t already. I will try my best to toss some letters into the winds of the internet more this year though. Here we go…
New Music Friday, March 5th 2021
Today’s a pretty stacked release day, let’s be honest. I’ve been keeping my eyes peeled for the latest from Tiger’s Jaw after following their singles release schedule so I’m starting my day with their album I Won’t Care How You Remember Me. Next up, likely will be Adult Mom’s Driver. I’ve also got a few new-to-me additions to my pile-o-records, including the self-titled Fake Fruit album, Full Well by the band Fitness, Thirdface’s Do It With a Smile, and Mere Women’s Romantic Notions.
Also, I stumbled upon an album from Norf Face who appear to be a grime / hip-hop outfit from London and a quick sample of the record sounds very intriguing to me. Plus, the ever-reliable Numero Records have their Numero 95 compilation of proto-vaporwave… so I’ll spin that for sure.
Since it’s also Bandcamp Friday, check out this Hype Machine-built Merch Table page for the above-linked Spotify playlist.
2021 So Far: A BNDCMPR Playlist
Speaking of playlists, I sure wish I could embed BNDCMPR playlists on Substack. Maybe if we all bother them on Twitter hard enough they’ll start supporting it?
If you don’t already use it, BNDCMPR is a handy way to create playlists out of Bandcamp track URLs. It’s fun! And helpful, because purchasing music is only a click away.
Linked above, and right here, is a quick one I whipped up featuring some music I’ve been spinning on-repeat this year so far. What are your favs of the year? I’d love for you to recommend me some music on Twitter, so get to it if you’re up for it!
Some stray thoughts:
I loved Pom Poko’s previous album, and their latest just solidifies how major a talent they are. Good lord, this album is so strong out of the gates and it never lets up.
Itemfinder were a real find for me, I think they popped up in my Spotify top recommendations - the static-y cover art grabbed me. Really into that album.
Turntable Report tipped me off on the Reymour album of minimal synthpop and that has certainly been one of my biggest addictions in the past week. It’s so good!
And finally, I just can’t quit the Beach Bunny EP. Every time I spin it, I think just one more listen, one more listen. The huge melodies and hooks, the cutting and powerful lyrics, its all just a delight. I can’t wait to hear what’s next for them.
The future…?
Not sure what I have planned for the future of the Discover Tab, but I mentioned on Twitter it could be fun to do some kind of planned listen-club - where I’d post an album and then a week later start a twitter thread for people to discuss their thoughts and feelings on the record.
I’d love to do this and to focus on new and old records, try and make it very far-reaching and inclusive of different genres/acts/etc. and not just what people are already talking about. Thoughts on this? Want to recommend an album for use in this project? Let me know, and maybe I’ll start a poll of some kind on Twitter to get some ideas for a first album.
That’s it, that’s all. Be excellent to one other.
