Happy new music Friday! Happy new music Friday… again!
Sheesh, I’ve been getting behind a lot so far this year. I didn’t get to my usual post on Friday, so here it is on Monday. Hopefully you had a good weekend and got a head start on some new music listening, and I can swoop in with a few more suggestions. No picks or lists to go with the playlist today, just stray thoughts and the playlist above.
I originally thought Beach Bunny had an EP out on Friday. Turns out, it was one of those “here’s the new single, with the other three singles, and we’ve labeled it as an EP on streaming for no reason.” Anyway, the singles for this one (“Big Pink Bubble” being the latest) have me excited because I wasn’t a big fan of their LPs and these sound more along the lines of the great Blame Game EP which is their best work so far imo.
Fans of vintage-y power-pop and indie have a lot to dig into this week:
Private Lives are jangly and suitably hooky upon first glance.
Sharp Pins sound a bit like when GBV do their classic rock aping power pop. “Every Time I Hear” is a dead ringer for a certain kind of GBV tune imo.
Dumbells also have a real vintage cover art thing going on, and they sound like a nice mix of interlocking guitar lines and vaguely post-punk bass lines alongside a direct approach to power-pop melodies.
Eggy play cromulent indie rock, some of which has that Stereolab-esque art-pop thing going down. Maybe a pinch of Earlimart?
Party’z have a fuzzy overblown garage-emo sound, definitely one I will check out.
Speaking of emo, the nu-grunge emo band Superheaven have an EP out. I loved Ours is Chrome back in 2015, I wonder how their sound will hold up now that there are a lot of bands doing this thing?
Feel It records blown-out-garage-rock hooks abound on the new one from Motorbike.
Dead Bars have a new one, their first since 2019. Scrappy beer soaked punk, vaguely Springsteen-ish (as dewtaylo points out over on RYM) and hook-focused of course.
Lots more to dig through too - some hip hop, some arty stuff, some jazz and artier fare as well.
What are you excited to listen to? What am I missing from my list? Let me know!
As always, please reach out on the hellsite (or the newer lesser evil hellsite). Better yet join the Rosy Overdrive Discord server where I can be found now and again. You can also find me in the corners of Rate Your Music scrounging for obscure emo, hardcore, indie-rock and pop-punk.
That’s it, that’s all. Be excellent to one other.
I’ve really been enjoying the Saba & No I.D. record. That’s probably my record of the week.

Man, you're making my Substack look inferior what with your two hour playlist and my half an hour one! Some great stuff here, as always. Particularly like the Eggy track! Will have to give their album a listen.
