Happy new music Friday! Hope y’all are doing great out there and enjoying the chilly weather as much as I have been. I’ll get right to the new music after a quick little plug:
Don’t forget that for the month of October, you can join in the Substack chat feature and take part in my Album of the Month discussion thread:
Here’s some stray thoughts as I organize my listening day:
Really wild day for punk:
New one from The Dopamines, their first since 2017. This is my pick before even hearing it because they are the best modern pop punk band by far in my opinion so I’m beyond stoked to hear it.
New Pinhead Gunpowder, which was unexpected to me as I hadn’t heard about it before realizing it existed. Nice surprise!
New EP from The Copyrights, another one of the great modern pop punk bands.
Toys That Kill have a new one out, featuring tracks off EP’s and compilations plus 2 previously unreleased tracks.
Comfy released two of my favourite indie records in recent memory with 2018’s Thanks for the Ride and 2021’s immaculate Volume For. To say I’m excited for another record from them is an understatement.
CANDY released their new EP a few days ago, but it’s easily one of the best of the year if you’re into very heavy hardcore music with blistering textural quirks (electronic flourishes, drumwork, etc.)
Karate are an all-timer band an I was just saying on Substack notes that it has been really cool to see them get the Numero Records bump with their re-releases. I have high hopes for this new record from them.
I loved Escuela Grind’s Memory Theater in 2022, but the band had a lot of gnarly allegations leveled at them. They’ve tried to pivot away from them, but it will definitely taint my opinion of them moving forward. I’ll check the record out, but this is a situation where I would otherwise be really excited to hear a new one from them but now I’m a lot less interested.
What are you excited to listen to? What am I missing from my list? Let me know!
As always, please reach out on the hellsite (or the newer lesser evil hellsite). Better yet join the Rosy Overdrive Discord server where I can be found now and again. You can also find me in the corners of Rate Your Music scrounging for obscure emo, hardcore, indie-rock and pop-punk.
