Happy new music Friday! I want to say that today is a low-key unreal day for new music releases, but I don’t think a day with this many albums from great bands can be called “low-key” at all.
Today is one of those release days where there is truly something for everyone, and so as such I have tried to organize my thoughts by genres:
If you like indie rock:
I reviewed the new Onsloow album in a previous post, and that’s out today and worth a look if you like indie rock and emo-pop that comes with a RIYL list of bands including: Alvvays, The Anniversary, Great Grandpa, Momma, and Slow Pulp.
2nd Grade have a new record out, very buzzed about online and since I enjoyed their last one I’m going to make sure I get to that one as well today.
One of my personal favs Sleeping Bag have a new record out today, their sixth I believe (not including demos or their albums of songs recorded for fans’ pets.)
Hedge, a band sure to be on my year-end list, have been talking about the new Ezra Cohen LP a lot so that alone has made it priority for me today.
I have no prior experience with this ALVILDA band but their album C’est Deja L’heure just sounded like something up my alley when I tried it out.
I absolutely loved the last Fievel is Glauque album so, and damn I’m saying this a lot today, I really need to prioritize that because it’s one of my most anticipated of the day.
If you like heavy stuff:
Squint have their debut LP out after a series of EPs and one collection of said EPs. I don’t like to say reductive things like this, but I think they may have released the best Drug Church album of the year with this one.
The Every Time I Die offshoot Better Lovers have their debut record out today, which I am very interested in hearing because ETID were an all-timer for me.
Thrash/metal/hardcore fans should check out the new EPs from Pest Control and Enforced, both of whom have had year-end albums on my lists in previous years.
If you like rap/hip hop:
Toronto's Swamp Thing (Timbuktu, Chokeules, & Savilion) have a new record out, just in time for Halloween!
If you like electronic/etc.:
Flock’s Flock II jumped out at me in the new release bins today, sounds like a really good avant-garde jazzy time to me.
Objekt has a new two-song single out today for dubstep/breakstep fans.
Nicolás Jaar released two (!) electroacoustic/downtempo releases today, collecting work that began life as “a 24-channel installation at the University Museum of Mexico City (MUAC), where it was exhibited for five months” which itself was based on a radio play entitled Archivos de Radio Piedras.
The Two Shell album out today sounds like the kind of glitchy, hyper-pop-y thing I can get behind. Will check that one out too.
What are you excited to listen to? What am I missing from my list? Let me know!
As always, please reach out on the hellsite (or the newer lesser evil hellsite). Better yet join the Rosy Overdrive Discord server where I can be found now and again. You can also find me in the corners of Rate Your Music scrounging for obscure emo, hardcore, indie-rock and pop-punk.
