Happy new music Friday! And welcome to anyone who has subscribed in the past week or two!
This week I was able to sit down and put in some pre-Work… work… and get my new music playlist ready without it having to be folded into an album review post as well.
Here’s some stray thoughts as I organize my listening day:
I’m a pro-third-wave-ska-revival guy, so all three singles from Kill Lincoln’s new record have been really hitting the spot. Usually I save the “pick of the week” for something I’ve already heard but I’m just so darn excited for a fun, energetic ska-punk record to end the sunnier weather with that it’s this week’s pick.
Sløtface put out an album that landed on my year-end list back in 2017, but their albums since then have never hit the same mark for me. That said, I still like their work and will definitely be prioritizing their latest today.
Similarly to the above point, Happy Accidents put out a record I really enjoyed in 2016 called “You Might Be Right”, but their subsequent albums didn’t stick in my mind so much. But I’m always interested to hear what they are up to.
Being Dead’s last album has a cover that makes me believe I certainly listened to it, because it is very familiar, but I can’t remember my thoughts on it. Their latest sounds good enough to prioritize this morning. Dark indie rock post punk kind of vibe.
Origami Angel have a huge following, and I’ve liked their records in the past but I’m not sure they’ve ever solidified as one of the best of the modern emo genre. I usually like their work though, so in continuing today’s established theme of “I know ‘em, like ‘em, might as well try their new one” that is exactly what I will do.
Trace Mountains are a good example of something that has been on my mind lately, and that is the indie rock band that seems to get slightly less interesting with every release. I’m not saying that they’ve ever dipped into outright bad territory, but I loved “A Partner to Lean On” but circa-“HOUSE OF CONFUSION” I started to lose my interest a little? Have felt similarly about a number of bands - Wednesday, Spirit of the Beehive, Horse Jumper of Love, etc.
I hate talking about this because it makes me sound like a “Well, I liked them better when they were less popular” but I swear that is not the case and if anything I’m excited that these bands’ popularity has been nothing but a steady upward trend. But their albums just haven’t grabbed me in recent years and I can’t put my finger on why.
That said, I hope this new one bucks the trend, because when Trace Mountains hits, they knock it out of the park imo.
Some new-to-me stuff that sounds intriguing (discovered either via Rosy Overdrive’s reviews or just digging in the new releases) include:
Best Bets (Power Pop, Indie Rock), fantasy of a broken heart (Neo-Psychedelia), Puddled (hazy Indie Rock), The Bad Ups (Power Pop Punk), Chain Cult (Punk, Post-Punk), Equal Idiots (Indie Rock, Alt Rock), Feeling Figures (Indie Rock), Ripped to Shreds (Death Metal)
What are you excited to listen to? What am I missing from my list? Let me know!
As always, please reach out on the hellsite if you’d like or better yet join the Rosy Overdrive Discord server where I can be found now and again. You can also find me in the corners of Rate Your Music scrounging for obscure emo, hardcore, indie-rock and pop-punk.
