Power Hour: Enon
Marbles Explode
When I started making Power Hour playlists, generally it was an attempt to distill an already-favourite band’s career into one digestible playlist; grab some of their more popular tunes, add some underrated tracks and make sure to hit something from every record (or at least try to.)
Sometimes though, I feel compelled to introduce myself to a band through the creation of a power hour. It can feel counter-intuitive to attempt this - as someone who isn’t a big fan yet - but I like the challenge of tasting a few records and trying to get a good overview ready for myself before diving in. Today’s playlist is one of those.
I’ve heard Enon before and knew the gist of things - ex-Braniac member John Schmersal forms the band, eventually settling into a trio with Toko Yasuda and Matt Schulz for a good chunk of their career. I knew they had an experimental take on the aughts-new-wave-post-punk thing that was going on, and that they seemed to release a well-received record every year for a stretch of time. I had heard “Natural Disasters,” “In This City” and “Knock That Door” among some other songs.
This is my attempt at distilling their different sounds into one playlist; hey, I might be way-off and missing some of their best work. That’s the fun of the power hour to me, everyone’s would be different. For me, this 45 minutes of Enon is sounding pretty solid, and I’m going to dive straight into their whole discography start-to-finish now - so it has served its purpose.
