Slushy.
Been a while eh?
Hey there. Haven’t… written… to y’all in a while. Guess what? Shit has been crazy, I’ve been busy, but I have been trying to maintain my weekly new release playlists over on my Twitter account. I share music there too, so if you are ever jonesin’ for recommendations or have something you loved recently that you’d like to shout from the rooftops, hit me up over there! While we’re here: do you miss the weekly release emails or is making the playlist and tweeting it out enough you suppose? I’d love to know, if some people find the email weekly essential I could kick my own ass into getting that done, for sure.
Well, another thing I haven’t done in a while is a mixtape. Here’s about 45 minutes of some stuff I’ve been digging, and some quick notes to go with it. I hope you’ve been doing well. Let me know on Twitter what’s up, what you’re listening to, what I should be listening to… all of that good stuff.
That Organi album is terrific and I have to thank Turntable Report for tipping me off on it. Beautiful album!
While I’m here, the Veik cut off their album Surrounding Structures was also a Turntable Report pick! Almost like they’ve got great taste and you should go follow ‘em or something.
LAPÊCHE was a nice find for me this year; I think you’d call it bubblegrunge meets shoegaze? Very good stuff.
I heard Smol Data's previous EP and I recall thinking it was pretty good but it didn't totally stick with me. This debut full-length though is great stuff, it feels very of the moment in terms of that melting pot where indie-rock and pop sits beside bleepy synths, acoustic jangles, crunchy riffs, skittering drum machines and third wave ska detours - basically anything is on the table when the songs feel like taking the scenic route. I like that a lot about this record.
This Snõõper band are what’s up right now… I swear I hear the pre-Milo era Descendents in their sound. I love this trend right now with cranked-up huffin’ on helium, overcaffeinated kinda punk… see also: Ghoulies.
Pretty sure the Number Girl album SCHOOL GIRL DISTORTIONAL ADDICT was a RateYourMusic find for me. Absolutely sick noisy post-hardcore guitar-rock; that I hadn't heard this until recently is criminal.
Speaking of, somehow I missed that Bright Channel LP from 2004, but it still sounds fresh to me. This has aged really well and was actually maybe a smidge before its time in 2004? This coulda came out last year and no one would have batted an eyelash.
Did you know Numero Group are re-releasing all of seminal emo-post-hardcore-jazz group Karate’s records? It’s true and I’m so fucking stoked about it. I can’t remember exactly how I stumbled upon them - it may have been when they released Pockets in 2004 and I just worked backwards from there - but I immediately fell for their whole discography. That it has been unavailable until now is downright shocking. I am so excited for more people to discover this catalog of music.
That’s it for now, make good choices and hope you enjoy the playlist!
