An update, a new release playlist.

The week…
Good morning! If you follow me on Twitter, you may know that I didn’t have an audio dispatch this week. A pesky kidney stone got in the way of that, so I’ve been laying low this week. Still waiting on it, too. Fun! (Not really.) I’ll hopefully have a new one next week, but that just gives you some time to go listen to the first and second episodes if you haven’t yet.

New release playlist for 2020-09-25
We’ve got another heavy week here, obviously the most talked about release is from Deftones I’d say. It has had me thinking about what I want these release playlists to be. Generally my gut instinct is to shy away from the big, big releases and focus more on under the radar stuff. Or would readers out there be interested in it being a more comprehensive collection? Again, my instinct is usually to try and err on the side of curation with a few exceptions. Would love to know what you think - comment below, or respond on Twitter.
Here’s some quick thoughts on a few releases, and then it’s off to the playlist.
Yes, I am very excited for the Deftones album Ohms. I’m a pretty new fan of them, to be honest. When White Pony came out, I shuffled them aside with the rest of the rap-rock / nu-metal genre. Years later, I realized that there’s much more going on there. I’ve dipped my toes into their career here and there, but in the past few years has been when I really jumped in. So it’s exciting for me to have my first “event” release of theirs, one where I’ve been waiting and hearing the singles and will be excitedly pressing play today.
I’ve mentioned in the past that I’ve become a little tired of the Black Metal sound when it comes to recent heavy releases - particularly the Black Metal approach to vocals, I’d say. When I checked this release Conduit from Proscription (spearheaded by ex-Excommunion member Terry ‘Christbutcher’ Clark) though, their blackened death metal sound really jumped out at me. Yes, they get into blast beats and throat-gargling vocals, but they also bust into sludge-metal riffing and more dynamic, melodic death metal riffery. That’s a lot more my style, I’d say.
Sad13 - aka Sadie Dupuis - has a new album out today. I haven’t kept up with their output entirely, despite being a big Speedy Ortiz fan. I heard Slugger in 2016 and enjoyed it but don’t have a very defined memory of it to be honest. What I’ve heard via the singles for this new album, Haunted Painting, though sounds incredibly promising. I’m very much enjoying the shift towards big, electronic pop vibes on these songs.
And now, here’s the playlist. Let me know what you’re spinning today if you’d like to!
That’s it, that’s all. Be excellent to one other.
